New Library Map

November 5th, 2009 by jbreems

Thank you to Scott Vande Kraats, a member of Prof. David Versluis’s graphic design class, who created a new map of the library.   We had relocated several collections of material due to the new furniture that we purchased in September.  This map shows the new locations of all our rooms and materials.

Use LoanTracker to Borrow Materials form Other Libraries

November 3rd, 2009 by jbreems

You can now submit and track your interlibrary loan requests via our new LoanTracker system.  The new system will make it easier for you to borrow materials and for library staff to find and manage your requests.

Log in to LoanTracker using your Dordt username and password.  The first time you use the system it will ask you to enter your user information.  Once you’ve done that, you can request books or articles and manage existing requests.  The new system allows you to cancel and renew items and to check if they have been shipped.  Journal articles can be viewed online through your account.

Citations from WorldCat and our EbscoHost databases can be submitted directly in LoanTracker.  You don’t have to re-type anything!

CAMIO is licensed for use by students, faculty, and researchers.  The works of art may be used for educational and research purposes, if they are properly credited.  However, images may not be published or otherwise distributed.

Student Input Used for New Library Signs

September 24th, 2009 by jbreems

We’re glad to have new signs in the library that clearly identify various areas and collections.  We’re especially pleased that these signs are the result of collaboration with students from two different classes.

The signs were designed by students in last spring’s ART 390:  Graphic Design III, which is taught by Professor David Versluis.  Thanks to Amanda Brouwer for the design and to Prof. Versluis for taking the project from design to production.

We also need to thank students from last spring’s PSYC 202: Introduction to Psychological Studies taught by Professor Sherri Lantinga.  These students conducted a physical audit of the library and gave us feedback on the locations and wording choices for the new signs.  For example, after meeting with this class, we decided that it was important to identify the location of the elevator.

If you were in one of those classes, thank you.  We’d be pleased if you came to the library to see the results of your work.

MLA and APA Citation Styles

September 23rd, 2009 by jbreems

Do you need help with citations?  Drop by the Love Your Library Night in the Library Lounge tonight from  7-9 p.m.  Reference Librarians, ASK Center Tutors, and LCAs will be available to help you with your specific questions about studying, citations, research, and more.

Both MLA and APA made significant revisions to their citations styles over the summer.  We’ve been tweaking the Dordt Library Style Guides to make sure that they illustrate the newest rules.  Here are the latest versions of our MLA and APA Guides, dated October 2009.  We also have guides for CSE (biology and life sciences) and Chicago Manual of Style (history).

Every year in late September, libraries across the United States celebrate the freedom to read during Banned Books Week.  Stop by the library to browse our display of banned or challenged book. You are welcome to check out any items from the table.  The American Library Association also publishes a list of current and classic books that have been challenged over the years.
