Monthly Archive for June, 2007

Let’s put a wrap on it

This will be my last post fora while. I’ll be out of the office until afterJuly 4. Time to take a break and spend time away from the job before hitting it hard in July when we really get rolling for 2007-2008.

Work is happening in the Rec Center for an additional weight room. Athletes will have first dibs on it, but will be open to the public when teams aren’t using it. I think the community will see a benefit in it almost immediately. The housing shuffle continues in the athletic department. Bill Bauer is in his office. He’s already made himself at home and has hit the ground running with Wade Whites. Craig Heynen will probably be in by the time I get back and Jeff Zomer, who’s filling in for Jeff Schouten for a year will be more visible in coming weeks.

Zomer is a 2006 graduate and was the assistant softball coach this spring. He’s getting married next week–he’s got a lot going right now.

Then we hit it hard. The basketball team is hosting a high school shootout in July that currently has eight teams entered and Tom Van Den Bosch always has a few volleyball camps in July and August. The ball keeps rolling.

I’ve made these blogs about what I’m busy with and am hoping you find them interesting. If you have anything you’d like to see here let me know.

By the way, season passes and pocket schedules will be available in July. Stop by if you need something.

Now, go West young man.

Halfway Through June

Another week is in the books. Might have a couple more recruit signings for this fall to report next week. They keep trickling in. Coaches are really turning almost all their attention to the incoming class for the fall of 2008 at this point.

Need some gameday personnel for the fall, namely some people willing to volunteer for various tasks in the pressbox at football games. Interested? Know someone who might be? Have them contact me at mbyker@dordt.edu

Coach Bill Bauer will be arriving on campus soon. He’s the other assistant coach/coordinator and will teach some classes and handle strength and conditioning chores for Dordt College athletes. He’s got head coaching experience and has been at Taylor University in Indiana most recently as an assistant football coach. Judging by his interview this winter/spring he’ll fit in quite nicely.

Rediscovered the public library about three years ago. Love to read when I have the time. Am working my way through Lute! The Seasons of My Life. It’s an autobiography by longtime Arizona basketball coach Lute Olson. Can still remember clearly him being whisked away from the Iowa sidelines in the ealry 1980’s by Arizona after a first roundupset loss to Wichita State in the NCAA tournament when Bobby Hansen missed a couple of free throws that could have won it. I digress. An interesting read. Just about 3/4 of the way through.

Also read Glory Road by Don Haskins last summer about the Texas Western team that won the NCAA tournament with an all black lineup. Liked the book. Movie? so-so. Have also read Bobby Knight’s autobiography, Rick Majerus and Jerry Tarkanian. What have I learned? There are lots of different ways to achieve success. Some I would follow, others I wouldn’t.

It’s warm. It’s June. It’s sunny. I’m out the door. Make sure you tell dad you love him this weekend. He needs to hear it………………..

Checking In

Just a few notes this week.

NAIA has mandated that all member schools file weekly stat reports to a national data base for men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball. Add that to the list of football, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball and softball. All are available on the NAIA home page at www.naia.org As with most projects, the outcome is completely dependent on the time and effort taken to getting the correct information in on a timely schedule.

Working on selling ads for the football, basketball and volleyball gameday programs. Huge task, trying to make it so we make minimal contacts with businesses. Therefore, we’ve combined some mailing lists and businesses used to getting contacted in October for basketball are being asked now. Change always brings some challenges…..we’re feeling our way through right now. If you’d like to advertise and haven’t been contacted, let me know and I’ll get the information to you.

A couple golfers, Jason Kroese and Matt Zwart, earned national scholar-athlete honors. Both were in the lineup for the Dordt golf team that qualified for the NAIA Region III golf meet and are junior, biology majors.

Two months from now athletes start reporting for fall sports………..unbelievable. Not much else to tell you. Things start popping again after the fourth of July. Then it’s crunch time again. Until then, we’ll enjoy aless hectic pace and continue to chip away at some projects that need to be done.

Out the door. Catch me if you can……………….

Rule Changes

Had some guys ask me about the college three-point line distance for upcoming seasons last week.

Here’s the scoop, just got the notice on Friday afternoon. The NCAA playing rules oversight panel approved the men’s basketball rules committee’s proposal to move the three-point line to 20 feet 9 inches effective in the 2008-2009 season. The women’s distance will remain 19 feet 9 inches. Men’s line and women’s line will have to be contrasting colors to prevent confusion.

There you have it, after this coming season the men will have to be back a foot further.

Where’d I put that umbrella……….

It’s June???

Just a few quick notes before the weekend. Wade Whites, assistant coach at Dordt College was on the job, getting aclimated on Friday, June 1. I think coach Heavner has been looking forward to this day for a long time–having someone else on staff he can talk about football with that is very knowledgeable as well. Coach Bill Bauer will be coming on in mid-June. Hard to believe we’re just three months away from the club football season opener. Volleyball and soccer come up even quicker than that.

Lots of comings and goings this week. A few coaches are taking classes for their various teaching assignments, others are organizing camps, Coach Van Soelen has his annual junior high camp starting on June 4 at the Rec Center and it runs for four days.

Still waiting on the official release of the men’s golf NAIA scholar-athletes. When that comes I think we’ll be set to officially close the books on 2006-2007.

The files showing game by game results of most sports at Dordt College have been posted on their respective pages.

What’s that? Now Kobe wants to be traded again? Wish he’d make up his mind. Wonder if he wishes he still had Shaq. There’s a reason I like college athletics……………………..
